Section CNECSA Opposes Tobacco POS Signs; Sets Date For Annual Meeting

Recently, the  Mass. Public Health Council, part of the state Department of Public Health (DPH), held a meeting where the DPH staff recommended that retailers be mandated to have tobacco cessation signage at point of sale. The New England Convenience Store Assn. (NECSA) strongly opposes the DPH proposal and it is expected that there will be future public hearings.
According to Diana O’Donoghue, NECSA executive director,  DPH made no attempt to reach out to the business community prior to making this proposal.  A similar effort to require this signage has occurred in New York where a lawsuit has been filed by the tobacco manufacturers and the New York Assn. of Convenience Stores (NYACS).   NECSA will notify members of our opposition efforts and the hearing date once published.  Members will be encouraged to testify and a copy of the DPH power point presentation is available on NECSA's website.
NECSA's Annual Meeting & Executive Networking Luncheon will be held Wednesday, Oct. 27 at the Boston Marriot Newton Hotel. Two C-Store leaders will share their vision and industry insights with colleagues. They are: NECSA Board of Director member Peter Tedeschi, president and chief executive officer of Tedeschi Food Shops and Scott Hartman, President of Rutter's Farm Stores. For more information, to register, or to be an event sponsor, go to NECSA’s website at www.necsa.net or contact NECSA's Program & Events Director Christina Apostal at (781) 297-9600, ext. 4 or christina@necsa.net. Section CMid Atlantic C-Stores Acquires 58 C-Stores &Fuel Stations

Mid-Atlantic Convenience Stores (MACS), has acquired 58 convenience stores/fuel stations, located in Northern Virginia and Maryland, from the Exxon Mobil Corporation.
MACS was formed by Catterton Partners to acquire convenience stores in the highly fragmented convenience store industry. Earlier this year in June, MACS acquired a majority interest in Uppy's Convenience Stores, Inc. and 170 convenience stores/fuel stations from ExxonMobil in Maryland, Virginia and Delaware. With the addition of the sites announced last week MACS now has nearly 300 convenience store operations across the Mid-Atlantic.
"This transaction further strengthens our branded leadership and market share position in the Mid-Atlantic States through the high quality brands of both Exxon and Mobil," said Steve Uphoff, Chief Executive Officer of MACS. "We plan to continue to pursue additional acquisition opportunities that will bolster our position in the Mid-Atlantic and build upon our record of integrating assets into our platform. We also remain focused on leveraging our industry expertise, along with the financial and strategic support from Catterton, in order to optimize operations, expand our retail offerings and enhance the customer experience,” he said. Section CPetroleum C-Store Summit Set For Boston In November

Oil Price Information Service (OPIS) along with Matrix Capital Markets Group, a convenience store merger & acquisition firm, have announced the second annual Petroleum/C-Store M&A Summit set for Nov. 11-12, at the Westin Copley Place in Boston.
Part of the event will be a fun and informative activity where attendees are divided into two teams that compete to buy a group of assets being offered for sale by a fictitious seller. Each team will be challenged to value the assets, assess the environmental issues, and submit an asset purchase agreement. The sale process will be structured with multiple rounds of bidding and participants will learn how to navigate a structured sale process. At the end of the summit, a winning bidder will be selected and prizes will be awarded. Dr. George Overstreet, Associate Dean for Center Development & Research, McIntire School of Commerce, University of Virginia, will be presenting some original research about valuation, real estate and other timely industry topics.
