Lance Snacks Merges With Snyder’s Of Hanover
Lance, Inc. and Snyder's of Hanover, Inc. signed an agreement last week to combine both companies and create a combined snacks company to be called Snyder's-Lance, Inc.
The combined company will have a well-established portfolio of snack food brands that includes Snyder's of Hanover, Lance, Cape Cod, Grande, Tom's, Jays, O-Ke-Doke, Stella D'oro, Krunchers!, Archway, Naturals as well as Lance Private Brands, a leader in private label cookies and crackers. Products will include pretzels, sandwich crackers, potato chips, cookies, tortilla chips and nuts.
Michael Warehime, current Snyder's chairman, will serve as chairman of the board of the combined company, and W. J. Prezzano, current Lance chairman, will serve as lead independent director. David Singer, current Lance president and chief executive officer, will become chief executive officer of Snyder's-Lance. Carl E. Lee, Jr., current Snyder's president and chief executive officer, will become president and chief operating officer, and Rick Puckett, current Lance executive vice president and chief financial officer, will become executive vice president and chief financial officer of the combined company. Snyder's-Lance will have a 16 member board drawn primarily from the existing Boards of both companies The company will have corporate headquarters in Charlotte, N.C. and additional headquarters in Hanover, Pa. where certain key leaders and functions will continue to be located. 
In Sudden Move, A&P Changes Leadership At The Top

On Friday, July 23, the Board of Directors of A&P appointed Sam Martin, formerly a top executive with Office Max and Wild Oats as the company's new president and chief executive officer to succeed Ron Marshall, who suddenly left the company.
Mr. Martin has more than three decades of management experience in the food retail industry with increasing operational responsibility. He joins A&P from Office Max, where he was chief operating officer since 2007.
In this role, he was responsible for all domestic and international contract and retail merchandising operations of the company, supply chain and communications. Prior to joining Office Max, Mr. Martin was chief operating officer for Wild Oats Markets, Inc. through the company's acquisition by Whole Foods. His experience also includes senior management roles at ShopKo Stores Inc. and Fred Meyer.
Christian Haub, executive chairman of A&P, said "The board and the company's major shareholders, Tengelmann and Yucaipa, have been instrumental in developing what I believe is the right turnaround strategy for A&P. As we moved to the implementation and execution stage of this comprehensive operational and revenue-driven turnaround, the board determined that the company needed a leader at the helm with the skill set Sam Martin possesses. Sam is a proven, hands on operational expert in the food retail industry. He has an ideal mix of food industry management experience encompassing operations, merchandising and supply chain. We thank Ron Marshall for his service and wish him well in his future endeavors." In a financial report for the first quarter of 2010, sales were $2.6 billion compared to $2.8 billion a year ago.. Comparable store sales decreased 7.2 percent.

Wegmans Opens New Store & Restaurant In Malvern, Pa.
Wegmans Food Markets’ new 130,000 square. foot store in Malvern, Pa., opened on July 18. The new Malvern store is Wegmans’ 14th in Pennsylvania and its 76th store overall. The Malvern location is the second Wegmans store with a full service in store restaurant called The Pub. The store has 650 employees. The store carries up to 700 different produce items,, hundreds of imported and specialty cheeses, 500 premium teas, and more than 70,000 products in all. In addition to the restaurant the store also has a 300-seat Market Café, The store manager is Kevin Lang who has worked 22 years for Wegmans. A native of Webster, New York, he started part time during high school, rounding up carts in the parking lot. He received Wegmans’ four-year college scholarship and trained in the company’s summer management internship program.

• Perdue Farms has recalled about 91,882 pounds of frozen chicken nuggets products that may contain foreign materials. The recalled products are one pound, 13-ounce bags labeled GREAT VALU Fully Cooked Chicken Nuggets with a Best If Used Date of June 9, 2011.
• The New England Produce Council changed its starting time for its Tuesday, July 27 golf tournament to 8:30 a.m.
• The Kroger Co. has opened its all new digital coupon center, at www.kroger.com. The center combines a combination of manufacturer, Kroger brand, private selection and web exclusive coupons. More than 100 digital coupons are currently available and can be accessed through the website.
• The Connecticut Food Assn. has named Chip Cingari, treasurer of Grade A Markets (Shop-Rite), as its Person of the Year. He will be honored Thursday, Oct. 21 at a CFA event MGM Grand at Foxwoods beginning at 6:00 p.m.
